Revision Hip and Knee Arthroplasties Expected to Increase in Next Decade

Dallas, November 9, 2019– Andrew M. Schwartz, MD presented the results of a study that showed the incidence of revision surgeries for hip and knee arthroplasty in the U.S. will “substantially increase in the next decade.” 

Dr. Schwartz and co-authors, Kevin X. Farley, BS, Thomas L. Bradbury, MD and George N. Guild, MD, used data from the National Inpatient Sample from 2002 through 2014 to project instances of revision surgeries to 2030. According to the abstract, “Using previously validated measures, Poisson regression and linear regression, analysis was performed to project annual incidence of rTHA/rTKA to the year 2030.” 

Results of the analysis showed incidence of revision hip arthroplasty is projected to increase by between 43%-70%, and incidence of revision knee arthroplasty is projected to increase by between 78%-182%. 

Authors hope their findings will encourage high-volume institutions to develop pathway protocols specific to joint revision surgery that could promote safe and cost-effective patient care now and in the future.
