Jason M. Jennings, MD and Douglas A. Dennis, MD started to look closer at the amount of IV fluids administered to patients in the perioperative period around total knee arthroplasty. They decided to do a study on patient hydration to see if having patients drink more water instead might reduce some of the side effects of IV fluid protocol. The study received the the James A. Rand Young Investigator’s Award at the 2019 AAHKS Annual Meeting. In this discussion, they cover:
- Overview of the methodology
- Questioning the IV fluid protocol
- A simple, safe protocol of oral hydration
- Benefits to patients
- Take home tips
