Before CMS posts information on payments and other transfers of value it receives from manufacturers on their public website, physicians have the opportunity to review the information to determine that it is accurate. To review information submitted by a manufacturer about you, the first step is to register on CMS’ Open Payments website. After you have registered, you will have until August 27, 2014 to review any information a manufacturer submitted about you. You may dispute any information that you believe is inaccurate. The manufacturer will be notified of your dispute and work with you to resolve it. Any information that is disputed, but not corrected, will still be posted on CMS’ public website, but will marked as “disputed.”

About The Physician Payment Sunshine Act

The Physician Payment Sunshine Act is a law that requires certain manufacturers of drugs, medical devices and biologics, such as manufacturers of hip and knee implants, to report annually to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) payments and other transfers of value it makes to physicians. The information that manufacturers must report includes a variety of payments made to directly or indirectly to physicians, such as for consulting, travel, educational items or research. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) will annually post the information reported to it on a public website. The first post will be made this year, on September 30, 2014.
