ACS Updates Statement on Concurrent Surgeries

OrthopedicsToday reported that the American College of Surgeons (ACS) updated its position on the practice of concurrent surgeries “when the critical or key components of the procedures for which the primary attending surgeon is responsible are occurring all or in part at the same time.” The ACS deems this as inappropriate; however, distinguishes two circumstances during “overlapping operations” when this may occur. “The patient needs to be informed in either of these circumstances. The performance of overlapping procedures should not negatively impact the seamless and timely flow of either procedure,” according to the ACS. Full story.
