An article-in-press in the Journal of Arthroplasty, “Can Total Knee Arthroplasty Be Performed Safely as an Outpatient in the Medicare Population?” features a study comparing the complication rates between outpatient, short-stay and inpatient total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Co-author, P. Maxwell Courtney, MD, a former AAHKS Health Policy Fellow, was interviewed by Orthopedics This Week regarding this “hot button” issue that has received much attention since the Medicare ruling removing TKA from the inpatient only list.
