The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a new proposed rule that would reduce the number of mandatory geographic areas participating in the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model from 67 to 34 and allow the remaining 33 to opt-in to continue participating voluntarily while also excluding low volume and rural hospitals from mandatory participation. It also proposes to cancel the previously proposed Episode Payment Models, with the Surgical Hip and Femur Fracture Treatment (SHFFT) hip fracture model among them.
The proposed rule also states that a new voluntary bundled payment model(s) will be forthcoming in CY2018 that would be eligible to be an Advanced Alternative Payment Model and is built off of BPCI. AAHKS will be commenting on this proposed rule before the October 16th deadline.
