The AAHKS Health Policy Fellowship provides young, future leaders with an opportunity to get involved in the policy-making process where they learn to become effective advocates. AAHKS is pleased to announce the following physicians chosen as this year’s fellows: P. Maxwell Courtney, MD, Alexander S. McLawhorn, MD, MBA and Adam Sassoon, MD.
This week’s featured Health Policy Fellow: Adam Sassoon, MD
Dr. Adam Sassoon is a dual-fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon with expertise in joint preservation, resurfacing, and replacement, as well as orthopaedic traumatology. He has a strong interest in health policy, particularly as it relates to patient access to care for hip and knee replacement surgery.
He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. While in residency, he also completed a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Science based on work focusing on tissue engineering using adult-derived stem cells. Dr. Sassoon was given the H.A. Peterson Award for scholarly writing and was a finalist for the Patrick J. Kelly Research Award for works completed during this time. While in residency, he was the first individual to be awarded three separate Mayo International Health Program Grants for orthopaedic outreach in Central America.
Following residency, Dr. Sassoon completed an orthopaedic traumatology fellowship at Orlando Regional Medical Center and a subsequent fellowship in hip and knee preservation, resurfacing, and replacement at Washington University in St. Louis.
In addition to time spent caring for his patients, Dr. Sassoon has devoted himself to advancing the field of orthopaedic surgery and has contributed over 20 original, peer-reviewed scientific articles to medical literature and has authored multiple book chapters in orthopaedic surgical texts. His research has been showcased in regional and national orthopaedic scientific meetings on over 40 occasions.
Dr. Sassoon is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, Orthopaedic Research Society, International Congress for Joint Reconstruction, Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, Alpha Omega Alpha, and Phi Beta Kappa.
I think it is awesome that the mayo international health program grants scholarships for orthopedic outreach in Central America. I think it is awesome that the mayo clinic is so helpful not only with health tips but also with funding future research. I would like to learn about how to get more involved.
