Is Joint Infection after Surgery Hereditary?

Dallas, November 12, 2016 — Authors presenting at the 2016 American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting sought to find if there is genetic susceptibility to periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) – an infection that develops over time following a hip or knee replacement.
Jeremy M. Gililland, MD presented the results of the study, “Familial Clustering in Periprosthetic Joint Infection: A Population-Based Cohort Study.” Dr. Gililland and his co-authors Mike B. Anderson, MSc, Karen Curtin, PhD, Jathine Wong, BSc,Christopher E. Pelt, MD and Christopher L. Peters, MD studied data from 1996-2013 of patients who underwent total joint arthroplasty. They also identified those who had a higher than normal rate of PJI in their families.
The study concluded that patients who experienced PJI had family members who also experienced infection. This suggests that this complication may have a genetic basis and helps explain why some patients experience this complication while others do not.
