CMS announced that Recovery Audit Contractors (RAC) will resume work in August to review some claims for improper Medicare payments. CMS’ statement reads as follows:

“Recovery Auditors are an important part of CMS’ efforts to ensure proper payments are made on behalf of patients and taxpayers by correcting improper payments in Medicare claims for health care services provided to Medicare beneficiaries. As part of our rebidding process for these contractors, an unexpected delay occurred when a number of contests from parties bidding for this work were filed and a judge ordered that CMS not finalize our contract selections. In order to fulfill our statutory requirement to identify and correct improper payments in the Medicare program, we are allowing a limited number of reviews to be restarted by our existing Recovery Auditors while these contract contests are fully resolved.” CMS Notice.
