Dr. McLawhornAlexander McLawhorn, MD, MBA is currently completing his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York. He will complete a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement next year at HSS. Dr. McLawhorn has interests in health care delivery and economics, and he earned degrees in medicine and business at Columbia University. During his residency, he has engaged in initiatives and research pertaining to health care quality, safety, and value. He currently serves as the Chair of the Housestaff Quality and Safety Council, and as a member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee and the Quality Coordinating Committee at his institution.

Dr. McLawhorn’s current research is focused on projects aimed at informing clinical decision-making relevant to total joint arthroplasty to improve value for patients, surgeons and the health care system. Dr. McLawhorn has authored over 16 peer-reviewed publications, he has over 50 presentations at national and international scientific meetings, and he was an AAHKS-sponsored participant at the 2013 AAOS/OREF/ORS Clinician Scholar Career Development Program. Dr. McLawhorn has earned numerous awards for research and clinical excellence, including the Eastern Orthopaedic Association’s 2014 Ranawat Award, the 2013 Richard S. Laskin Award, and the Distinguished Housestaff Award.

He is a resident member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association’s Emerging Leaders Program, the New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the Medical Society of the State of New York.
